Browser Extension Privacy Policy
Last updated: 14 June 2026
This policy covers the "SEO Audit — RankNibbler" browser extension for Chrome and Edge. It is separate from the privacy policy for the RankNibbler website and account, because the extension works very differently: it analyses pages entirely inside your browser and does not send your data anywhere.
In short: the extension reads the page you ask it to audit, runs its SEO checks locally in your browser, and sends nothing to RankNibbler or anyone else. There are no accounts, no servers, no analytics and no tracking.
1. What the extension does
When you click the RankNibbler icon in your browser toolbar, the extension reads the HTML and DOM of the page in the active tab and runs its on-page SEO checks against it. That is the only thing it does, and it only does it when you click the icon. It does not read any page, or do anything at all, until you choose to run an audit.
2. What the extension does not do
- It makes no server calls to RankNibbler. The audit runs entirely in your browser.
- It sends no data about you, the pages you visit, or the pages you audit, to RankNibbler or to any other server.
- It does not read any page until you click the icon, and then only the page in the active tab at that moment.
- It does not run in the background and does not track your browsing across sites.
- It stores nothing — no audit history, no settings, no identifiers.
- It contains no analytics, telemetry, advertising or tracking of any kind, and sets no cookies.
- It does not collect or transmit personal information, page content or URLs.
- It contains no remote code — all of its logic ships inside the extension package and is reviewed by the browser store before it reaches you.
3. Permissions
The extension requests only the two permissions it needs to read the page you ask it to audit, and no broad host permissions:
| Permission | Why it is used |
|---|---|
activeTab | Temporary access to the current tab, granted only at the moment you click the icon, so the extension can read the page you want audited. |
scripting | To inject the read-only extractor that gathers the current page's HTML for the checks. |
The extension does not request host_permissions, so it has no standing access to any website. Access is granted by you, per click, and ends as soon as the audit is done.
4. Third-party images shown in the audit
We want to be straightforward about the one case where your browser loads content from outside the extension. Some audit tabs display images that are fetched directly by your browser from third parties. These are image requests only — no information about you is sent with them — and they are loaded with referrerpolicy="no-referrer" so the audited page's address is not passed along.
- Social tab: to preview how a page looks when shared, the extension displays the page's own social preview image (the
og:image/twitter:imageit declares). That image is loaded from wherever the audited page hosts it — typically the site's own CDN. - International tab: to label language and region targeting, the extension shows small country-flag icons loaded from flagcdn.com.
These requests are made by your browser as it renders the images, in the same way any web page loads an image. The extension does not report anything about you to these services.
5. Links you click
The only other outbound activity comes from links that you choose to click in the audit popup — for example a link to ranknibbler.com or to Google's Rich Results Test. Those open in a new tab and are ordinary website visits that you initiate. The extension itself transmits nothing.
6. Children
The extension is a professional SEO tool and is not intended for children. Because it collects no personal data at all, it does not knowingly collect data from anyone.
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The updated version will ship with the extension and be published here, and the "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the latest version. If the extension's behaviour ever changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will describe it here.
